Konnet PowerEZ Plus iPhone/iPod Battery Pack Review

I am checking out the Konnet PowerEZ Plus external battery for the iPhone or iPod. This device is an external battery pack to give you more run time from your Apple device. The Konnet PowerEZ Plus also has another nice feature that makes watching video on the iPhone more comfortable. Read on for all of the details.

Specifications

The Konnet PowerEZ Plus has a 1000mAh internal rechargeable Li-Poly battery and a built-in kickstand for keeping the phone upright. The Acer aspire 3680 battery charges from USB and has a LED indicator for the amount of power in the battery.

In Use

The big problem with my iPhone 3GS is that it's battery life isn't that great. The problem with battery life is particularly evident if I play lots of games, surf the web, or watch video on it for very long. The solution is an external battery pack like the Konnet PowerEZ Plus. This device connects to the iPhone or iPod via the dock and charge connector.

The feature that the Konnet PowerEZ Plus has that many external battery packs lack is a kickstand. That kickstand is great if you ended the extra battery life to watch more video since you can prop the phone up and watch without having to hold it.

Konnet promises that the battery pack will add up to 166 hours of standby time, up to 3hours of talking time in 3G, and up to 5.5 more hours of video watching for the iPhone 3GS or 3G. In my testing, I had my iPhone with me for a long day at a car show. I ended up watching lots of video and playing a bunch of games at slow points of the show. My phone turned off due to low battery.

I hooked the Konnet PowerEZ Plus up to the charge port with the LED indicator on the battery pack showing a full charge. I spent several more hours randomly texting, talking on the iPhone, and playing games and the phone continued to work. When it was finally time to pack up and head home the Konnet PowerEZ Plus showed one of the three indicator lights still lit and my iPhone had almost half a charge.

The Konnet PowerEZ Plus is well made and includes a carry bag. It's a bit less than half as long as the iPhone and weighs about the same when held in the hand. The one thing that bothered me about the Konnet PowerEZ Plus on my iPhone 3GS was that the battery could wiggle around a bit because the fit was not particularly tight. There is a slight gap between the body of the Konnet PowerEZ Plus battery and the iPhone.

 

Presumably, that gap is to allow the use that has a thin case on their iPhone to use the battery pack without having to remove the case. I worried that the connector would be damaged over time with the slightly floppy connection between the two devices.

The RC 1 version of the upcoming OS lasted only 5.48 hours using the same test conditions. Windows supporters will no doubt chime in with claims that the Apple hardware is to blame, but Shimpi found some reason to believe that may not be the case.
